One of the biggest Mississippi College events of the year is about to happen: Choctaw Fest. The festival is one of the last events in the fall put together by the Campus Activities Board. Choctaw Fest is an outdoor concert on “the Bowl” behind the Caf and meant to be a time for students to relax and have fun.
The featured artists for Choctaw Fest are Emily Hern and headliner Andrew Ripp. This year, Choctaw Fest will coincide with Preview Day on Nov.16, and prospective students along with their families will have the chance to join in on the fun.
Moriah Chitwood is this year’s CAB chairperson, overseeing the group of students who plan events like this. Chitwood said Choctaw Fest usually falls around the end of the semester and people are ready to be done with school and relax.
“We usually try for a singer song writer concert event just because of the type of weather and people can come grab some hot cocoa and hang out,” she said.
About the artists this year, Chitwood added, “They are two phenomenal singer songwriters. Very cute and really hipster. I think it’s going to be a great concert.”
Hunter Sandoval, the event coordinator, said, “Choctaw Fest is an MC tradition where we, as Campus Activities Board, bring in normally a singer songwriter to put on a show for us. Normally it’s done during the week but this year we are putting it on a Saturday night during the same day as Preview Day to change things up a bit and also to give our prospective students something to do. It’s a very chill and relax atmosphere.”
Sandoval said that inviting prospective students and their families to join everyone at Choctaw Fest is “a great way to show them what CAB does for students on campus and an example of the events we put on. We hope it shows them that we’re a ton of fun. We love putting on fun events on campus”
The Choctaw Fest concert will begin after the Preview Day activities with Emily Hern opening at 7:00 p.m. and Andrew Ripp will play at 8:00 p.m. Sandoval said that Choctaw Fest this year will have an “old Americana” feel with free glass bottle cokes and Chex mix as snacks.
Prospective students and their families will join with MC students on Preview Day for a fun-filled day of events. Prospective students will tour campus and get to sit in on MC classes. Games will be held on the quad along with booths set up for tailgating for the football game.
Choctaw football will face off against the Mary-Hardin-Baylor Crusaders at 1:00 p.m., and later that afternoon, the Men’s basketball team will play their second game of the season against Pensacola Christian College in the A.E. Wood Coliseum at 5:00 p.m.
Sandoval added, “I encourage all of campus to come out to Choctaw Fest. It’s a great way to meet new people and hang out with friends while enjoying a free concert. I love being a part of Campus Activities Board, planning these events, and seeing the joy it brings people. I encourage all of campus to come out and experience it with us.”
