GSC Postpones High Contact Risk Sports/by Elliot Reeder
Following the NCAA’s decision to cancel Division II fall sport championships, the Gulf South Conference decided to postpone football, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, and men’s and women’s basketball until at least January 1.
Golf and cross country competition is still allowed in the fall, even though they will not have an NCAA championship event. For Mississippi College, this means that three teams will still be playing in the fall: men’s cross country, women’s cross country, and men’s golf.
The GSC says it will explore playing a spring season for football, men’s and women’s soccer, and volleyball. They will also work on adjusting the schedule for men’s and women’s basketball due to the start of the season being postponed by just under two months.
The GSC cited the safety of players, participation protocols, and the cancellation of fall sports at the NCAA level as the reasons for the postponement.
